Shanghai International Cruise Terminal

Shanghai, China
Status: Completed

Architecture designed by John Curran when he was co-owner of Spark Architects

Winner of Best Mixed Use Buildings Award at MIPIM Hong Kong 2011, located on the graceful curve of the Huangpu River in the North Bund of Shanghai, the site is home to a shipping community set in the context of a new 800m long waterfront park, for citizens and visitors to enjoy.

This maritime gateway welcomes cruise ships from around the world into the heart of Shanghai city. A parade of buildings form a Business and Entertainment District, 260,000sqm in area. At the centre of the chorus line is the ‘Shanghai Chandelier’ - a beguiling composition of public event spaces levitate to mark the entrance from the city into the open green parklands.

Cruise ships of 200,000 tonnes dock alongside to enclose a dramatic public space in the park, reverberating to the sound of ship horns, echoing out through the city.

The project uses the latest in renewable energy – river water cooling technology cools the entire community during the summer months.
