Zhoushan Yepaidang

Zhoushan, China
Status: Completed

A one km stretch of coastline was regenerated into a lively promenade of 70 seafood restaurants along the south coast of Zhoushan island - the municipal centre of an archipelago of islands near the city of Ningbo, 200 km south of Shanghai.

The completed promenade has been visited by over 2 million people annually over the past 10 years, contributing 40% additional revenue to the local economy.  In short, the first generation of completed restaurants put money in local people’s pockets.  The restaurants serve seafood fresh from the sea - from fishing boat into a wok and onto your plate inside 10 minutes! A truly cooperative design, flexible planning allow units to combine together for large social gatherings, including 300 person weddings on the sea.

Lifting people out of subsistence living empowered this community to take control over their environment.  People choose to cherish their ecology when they no longer had to worry about how to put food on the table.  Such has been our experience on the first generation of completed seafood restaurants.  With local prosperity, disposal of plastic & chemical oil waste into the sea has declined to near zero levels along this coastline.  A Quality Built Environment can make all the difference.
